Post-traumatic stress symptoms and social support with open heart surgery patients

Abstract
This study was to investigate the relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms and social support as surveyed by cross-sectional study with 99 open heart surgery patients. The subjects of the study were 99 adults who had open heart surgery between 3 and 18months previously at Y university hospital in Daegu.
The data were collected from 19 september to 19 October, 2002. The instruments used for this study were "The Impact of event scale" which was developed by Horowitz et al.(1979) and "Perceived social support scale" had developed by Park(1985). Both scales were self-report questionnaire. The Questionnaire were mailed to 99 individuals. Seventy individuals completed and returned all questionnaire.
The survey data was analyzed by the SPSS/PC+ program.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The mean scores of post-traumatic stress symptoms was 15.80¡¾12.14 (range: 0.00-33.00), the mean score of intrusive thoughts as subarea of post-traumatic stress symptoms 7.50 and the mean score of avoidance/numbing as subarea of post-traumatic stress symptoms 8.30.
2. The mean score of social support was 86.21 ¡¾ 16.53 (range: 36.00-118.00), the highest score of subarea of social support was appraisal support and the lowest score of social support was material support.
3. There was statistically significant correlation between post-traumatic stress symptoms and social support (r=-0.39, p= 0.001).
4. There was statistically significant difference in the score of post-traumatic stress symptoms according to frequency of heart-surgery, educational level.
